Resume action words to replace “responsible for”

Updated 20 October 2026 · 2 min read

“Responsible for…”, “Worked on…”, “Helped with…” — these phrases tell an employer what your duties were, not what you achieved. Starting each line with a strong action word, and adding a number, makes your resume clearer and more impressive in seconds.

The simple formula

Action word + what you did + the result (with a number)
“Reduced customer waiting time by 30% by reorganising the front desk schedule.”

Three rules

  1. Use past tense for past jobs (“Managed”) and present tense for your current job (“Manage”).
  2. Don’t repeat the same word on every line — mix them up.
  3. Be honest. Only claim results you really achieved; interviewers will ask about them.
