Passport photo size by country

Passport and visa photos are not all the same size. A photo that is perfect for a UK passport will be rejected for a US one. This chart shows the most common sizes, and how to make a correct photo at home for free.

Important: rules change from time to time, and visas can need different sizes from passports. Always check the official website of the government or embassy you are applying to before printing or uploading.

Make a passport photo at home

  1. Take a clear photo (see the tips below).
  2. Open our Passport photo tool and choose your photo.
  3. Pick 35 × 45 mm, 2 × 2 inch, or Custom and type your country’s size (for example 50 × 70 for Canada, 33 × 48 for China).
  4. Drag and zoom so your face fits inside the oval guide.
  5. Download a single photo for online forms, a 4 × 6 inch sheet to print at a photo shop, or an A4 sheet to print at home.

Printing at home? In the print settings choose “Actual size” or 100%. “Fit to page” changes the size and the photo will be rejected.

Tips for a photo that gets accepted

  • Background: plain white or very light grey, with no patterns or shadows.
  • Light: soft daylight from in front of you. Avoid shadows on your face and behind your head.
  • Pose: look straight at the camera, head straight, neutral face, mouth closed.
  • Eyes: open and clearly visible. Most countries do not allow glasses in passport photos.
  • Clothes: avoid white tops against a white background. No hats, except for religious reasons.
  • Camera: ask someone else to take it from about 1–1.5 metres away, at eye level. Selfies often distort the face.
  • Recent: most countries want a photo taken in the last 6 months.

Uploading instead of printing?

Online applications often have a file-size limit too. After making your photo, use Resize photo to KB to bring it under the limit, for example 240KB or 50KB, without changing its shape.
