How to resize a photo to 20KB, 50KB or 100KB

Many online applications — for jobs, exams, visas, college admissions and government services — ask for a photo or signature “under 50KB” or “between 20KB and 50KB”, sometimes with an exact size in pixels too. A normal phone photo is 2–5MB, which is 40 to 100 times too big. Here is how to fix that.

KB, MB and pixels — what do they mean?

  • KB and MB measure the file size (how much storage it uses). 1MB is about 1,000KB.
  • Pixels measure the picture size (width × height), like 200 × 230. A form may ask for both a KB limit and a pixel size.
  • A smaller picture size usually means a smaller file size — but you can also shrink the file by saving it with slightly lower quality.

Resize a photo to a KB size, step by step

  1. Open our Resize photo to KB tool.
  2. Tap the pink box and choose your photo. iPhone (HEIC) photos work too.
  3. Tap the size you need — 20KB, 50KB, 100KB, 200KB — or choose Custom and type any number.
  4. If the form also gives a size in pixels, tick “Also set exact size in pixels” and type the width and height.
  5. Press “Make it 50KB”, check the preview, and download. The new size is shown before you save it.

Tip: the tool keeps the best quality that still fits under your limit, and only makes the picture smaller if it has to.

Typical sizes forms ask for

WhatCommon file sizeCommon pixel size
Applicant photo20KB–50KB or up to 100KBAround 200 × 230 or 3.5 × 4.5 cm shape
Signature10KB–20KBAround 140 × 60 (wide and short)
Supporting documents (as images)100KB–300KBVaries

These are only common examples. Every form is different — always follow the exact numbers in your application’s instructions.

Tips for a photo that gets accepted

  • Use a plain, light background and good daylight. Avoid shadows on your face.
  • Face the camera straight on, with your whole face visible.
  • Crop out extra space before resizing — more of your face, less background.
  • Need the official passport shape? Use our Passport photo tool first, then resize the result to the KB size.

How to make a clean signature image

  1. Sign on plain white paper with a dark blue or black pen.
  2. Take a photo from straight above in good light.
  3. Crop it so the signature fills most of the picture.
  4. Resize it with the tool — choose Custom and type the KB limit your form asks for, usually 10–20KB.

Why does my upload still fail?

  • Wrong file type: most forms want JPG. Our tool always saves JPG. If you have a HEIC photo, it is converted automatically.
  • Too small: some forms also have a minimum, like 10KB. If your file is below it, choose a bigger size.
  • Wrong pixel size: double-check the width and height the form wants, and use the pixel option.
